How to enrol in Prato schools

Who can enrol?

All foreign minors of a school-going age (6 to 16 years of age).
Minors without identity documents and/or without valid residence permits must be enrolled subject to reservation, but without this having an effect on the awarding of qualifications.

Choosing a class

Foreign minors are enrolled in classes that correspond to their age.
In special cases teachers can decide to place the pupil in the preceding class or in the following one relative to the age of the pupil on the basis of:

  • skills, ability and level of education achieved;
  • order of studies completed in the country of origin;
  • studies completed in the country of origin;
  • any qualification possessed.

Documents to be presented

In order to enrol in a school, the paperwork for the school must be completed and the following documents presented:

  1. Identity document proving identity and parentage between the pupil and accompanying adult(s). Foreign citizens with residence permits may make use of auto-certification, but documents must be shown if requested.
  2. Health care documents. The document proving that obligatory vaccinations have been carried out must be original and translated into Italian (with sworn translation or translation carried out at the Servizio Immigrazione e Cittadinanza / Immigration and Citizenship Service). If the minor does not have this document the family may request a medical examination and ask for any outstanding vaccinations to be provided.
  3. In the case of transfer from one Italian school to another a ‘nulla osta’ (permission) issued by the old school must be presented at the new school.

If the school document is written in a language which is difficult to understand in Italian (Chinese, Arabic) it can be translated by official translators at the Law Courts.

How and where to enrol

Enrolment in primary schools and middle schools can be done exclusively online on the dedicated website under the management of the Ministry of Education: www.iscrizioni.istruzione.it

Enrolments are accepted at the schools themselves. Schools must accept all enrolments, even if there are no places available. A school which accepts enrolment but has no places available must help the pupil and family to find another school.
Information and clarification can be obtained from the school itself or the Servizio Immigrazione e Cittadinanza / Immigration and Citizenship Service.
