Conversion from study purposes to employment purposes

In general, it is possible to convert a residence permit for study or training purposes to a residence permit for employment or self-employment purposes, only if it falls within the number established, on a yearly basis, by the Immigration Quota.

It is possible to convert the permit type from study purposes to work purposes (including project contracts) outside the Immigration Quota only in the following cases:

1) for persons who had a residence permit for family reasons and, upon reaching the age of 18 years, changed it to a residence permit for study purposes;

2) for persons who gained the following qualifications in Italy:

  • Three Year Degree (180 university training credits);
  • Two Year Specialist Degree (120 university training credits);
  • Teaching Degree (300 university training credits);
  • Specialist Diploma (minimum duration: 2 years);
  • University Research Doctorate (minimum duration: 3 years), even if the entire course was not carried out in Italy;
  • University Masters Level 1, 3 Year Post-Graduate Masters Degree (minimum duration: 1 year);
  • Enhancement Certificate or Diploma, post-graduate specialist or teaching (duration: 1 year – 60 university training credits);
  • University Masters Level 2, post-graduate specialist or teaching (minimum duration: 1 year) even if the entire course was not carried out in Italy.
