What is this?
This type of permit allows the foreign national citizen to have the guaranteed right to study, and not only in university.
It is issued on the basis of the entrance visa or by conversion from a previous residence permit for family reasons, for minors/guardianship.
The duration of the the residence permit for study purposes corresponds to the duration of the course attended.
The permit allows the holder to have a part-time job for a maximum of 20 hours per week.
It can be converted to a residence permit for work purposes but only if the applicant falls within the Immigration Quotas.
The duration of the residence permit for study purposes is not calculable for the purpose of applying for the EU long term residence permit.
The residence permit for study purposes can be renewed by submitting the necessary documentation, even in cases whereby the foreign national is enrolled in a course that is different to that for which the residence permit was obtained.
The foreign national in possession of a residence permit for study purposes that was issued in another EU member state can enter Italy without an entrance visa to continue studies already ongoing for a period of more than 3 months.
Foreign National Students: Second level Masters Degree or Doctorates
Foreign national students who have obtained a doctorate or second level masters degree in Italy can, when their residence permit for study purposes expires, and if enrolled in the registry listing, apply for a residence permit for pending employment.
The residence permit for pending employment is, of course, aimed at those who do not have a job.
If the student has a work offer he/she can convert the residence permit for study purposes to a residence permit for work purposes, submitting the application to the Immigration Help Desk.
