All foreign nationals, even those without a residence permit, can avail of basic medical care for both illness and accident, without being reported to the authorities. 

What is 118?

118 is the national medical emergency number. 

This service is open 24 hours a day and offers appropriate assistance in case of emergency by sending the relevant emergency services.

Call 118 in the following situations: 

  • severe pain;
  • road accident, sporting accident, workplace accident, accident in the home;
  • urgent necessity for hospitalisation; 
  • in any probable or certain life-threatening situation

How to call 118

  1. Dial 118 from any phone, even one without credit; 
  2. Wait for the Central Switchboard to answer; 
  3. Answer the operators questions in a calm and precise manner.  Even if the questions seem unimportant, they are fundamental in order to ensure a speedy intervention.  It can happen, while waiting for the ambulance to arrive, that you will be given instructions on how to help the person in need. Co-operating means helping to save a life.

You can call 118 from almost any telephone, be they public, private or a mobile phone (even without credit).  The call is free of charge.  The service is open 24 hours a day.
